Supporting Your Student's Global Experience
Studying abroad is an exciting milestone, and family support plays an important role in helping students prepare for a successful experience. At Gies Global, we work directly with students throughout every stage of the study abroad process – from planning and applying to preparing for departure and returning home. We encourage families to stay informed while empowering students to take ownership of their experience.
Communication & Privacy
Gies Global communicates directly with students regarding applications, deadlines, and program requirements. Because student education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), we cannot share information about a student's participation or records without their written permission. If you have questions about your student's experience, we encourage you to speak with your student first.
What to Expect
Studying abroad is a transformational experience. Students often develop greater independence, confidence, and cross-cultural understanding while living and learning in a new environment.
Like any significant transition, there may be challenges along the way. The first few weeks abroad can be an adjustment as students adapt to a new culture, academic system, and daily routine. This is a normal part of the experience.
When students return home, they may also experience "reverse culture shock" as they readjust to life back in the United States.
How Families Can Help
The best way to support your student is to encourage independence while remaining a trusted source of encouragement. We recommend that families:
- Encourage students to attend advising sessions and information meetings.
- Allow students to complete applications and communicate with Gies Global directly.
- Discuss budgeting and financial planning before departure.
- Talk about personal safety and responsible decision-making.
- Stay connected while recognizing that students may be busy adjusting to their new environment.
Health & Safety
Student health and safety are our highest priorities. Gies Global works closely with Illinois International and our partner institutions to support students before and throughout their time abroad.
Before departure, students receive guidance on topics including:
- Health and safety expectations
- Emergency procedures
- Local laws and customs
- Travel preparation
Families can support their students by encouraging responsible travel habits, including traveling with others, following local laws, and making informed decisions while abroad.
Costs & Financial Aid
Many families are surprised to learn that studying abroad can cost about the same—or even less – than studying on campus.
Semester exchange programs allow students to pay University of Illinois study abroad tuition rather than tuition at the host institution. Financial aid and many scholarships can also be applied toward eligible study abroad programs.
Students are encouraged to explore scholarship opportunities early in the planning process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my student need to speak another language?
No. Most Gies semester programs offer enough courses in English for students to complete their academic requirements.
What travel documents are required?
Most students need a valid passport, and some destinations also require a visa. Requirements vary by country and citizenship.
How safe are the programs?
Gies Global carefully evaluates each program location and provides students with resources, pre-departure preparation, and ongoing support throughout their experience.
