CPA Exam Resources and Requirements

As a student in one of the nation's top accountancy programs, you're building the knowledge and skills needed for a successful accounting career – including CPA licensure. Use the resources below to learn about CPA eligibility, course planning, the application process, and exam preparation as you plan your path to becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

Why Become a CPA?

Earning your CPA license is demanding – but the return on investment is undeniable. Here is why it’s worth it:

Career Mobility

A significant majority of accounting managers and directors hold a CPA.

Higher Salary

CPAs typically earn 10–15% more than non-certified accountants.

Diverse Opportunities

From public firms and private corporations to local businesses and global enterprises.

Financial Incentives

Many employers offer a substantial bonus upon passing the CPA exam.

High Demand

A widespread CPA shortage means exceptional job security across every industry.

Trust & Respect

The license serves as a premium symbol of credibility and rigorous professional expertise.

CPA Eligibility in Illinois

Illinois offers multiple pathways to CPA licensure, each with its own educational requirements. If you plan to become licensed in Illinois, review the requirements on the Illinois Board of Examiners (ILBOE) website and talk with your academic advisor to determine the best path for you.

CPA Eligibility Through the MAS Program

For many students, completing the Master of Accounting Science (MAS) is the most direct path to meeting Illinois CPA education requirements. Students who complete the MAS after earning a bachelor's degree in accountancy will typically exceed the 150 credit hours required for CPA licensure while completing the coursework needed for eligibility.

Planning for the CPA Exam

Many MAS students are eligible to begin taking sections of the CPA Exam while enrolled in the program. Because each exam section typically requires 80–120 hours of preparation, some students choose to begin testing during the program, while others focus on studying and take the exams after graduation.

Your academic advisor can help you understand your eligibility, develop a course plan, and determine the best timeline for preparing for the CPA Exam.

Need help planning your schedule?

Meet with your academic advisor to review your course plan, discuss concentration options, and ensure you're on track for graduation.
